Wilwood Disc Brake Rotors

ROTOR INFORMATION

 

Rotor Performance:

Wilwood Engineering produces over 120 different types of high performance rotors designed specifically for racing applications. Although a rotor's basic function is to disburse energy (in the form of heat) created by the brake pads clamping onto the rapidly rotating rotor, how wel! a rotor performs this job under the extremes of racing is why Wilwood rotors are considered the best in the industry.

The key elements involved in a high performance rotor are:

What is the mechanical advantage of the rotor (diameter).

How stable (resistant to cracking) is the rotor material during thermal cycling (the continual process of heating and cooling).

How stable is the rotor material when thermal shock occurs (the large, sudden, rapid change in rotor temperature).

How efficient the rotor is at disbursing heat caused by friction between the rotor and brake pad.

How light the rotor can be made and still perform the task required (rotating weight not only contributes to unwanted unsprung weight, but also rotating weight).

Wilwood engineers address these critical questions and others when designing rotors. Because race cars differ in their braking requirements, Wilwood has developed both specific designs and specialized materials and manufacturing techniques to accommodate different performance criteria.

Wilwood vented rotors are designed for maximum cooling. The internal vanes pump cool air from the center of the wheel and take heat away from the rotor, allowing rotor temperatures to decrease. Wilwood has designed special curved vane and straight vane rotors to effectively move large volumes of air to rapidly disburse this heat (energy). Specially formulated iron is used to enhance the stability of the rotor, while allowing difficult castings in complex vane configurations to be produced. Wilwood's proprietary casting techniques are the result of over 20 years of vented rotor research and development combined with actual on-track performance evaluation. All rotors are precision machined to assure surfaces are flat and parallel.

Wilwood specialty steel rotors are used when rapid thermal inputs occur and material stability is required (i.e. when a dragster must brake from 300 mph). Under such conditions specialty steels are used, often cross drilled to reduce rotational weight. Wilwood also manufactures dynamic mount rotors for Super Speedway applications as well as special limited duty street rod and pro series solid rotors.

For all rotor designs, Wilwood conducts extensive in-house dynamometer testing to measure results of rotors under the most demanding conditions, This unique testing, teamed with extensive research and development and track testing assure the racer of the best quality high performance rotors available.

How to measure rotors

Solid / Drilled Rotors

WIwood Engineers use a special high strength steel alloy and proprietary processing techniques to manufacture solid Steel Rotors which provide greater strength, stability, and resistance to warpage. Designed for braking applications that do not demand continuous thermal cycling or great cooling requirements, these rotors are used in Dirt Track, Lightweight Formula and Open Wheel Racing, as well as drag racing and super speedway applications because they will not fail under sudden thermal shock conditions. The lightweight designs greatly reduce rotating, unsprung weight which is further minimized with cross drilling. All rotors are blanchard ground for flatness and then plated with a protective coating. Wilwood's super speedway rotors are available with our dynamic mounting system for increased performance. Midget and TQ rotors are machined with convenient caliper mount access holes.

Wilwood Engineering's Ultralite vented straight vane rotors are cast from premium iron alloy to provide maximum stability over a wide temperature range. Excellent rotor wear, superior heat dissipation qualities, resistance to checking and cracking and a wide range of dimensions and mounting patterns provide unequaled user versatility. Standard applications include Late Model, Open Wheel, Modified, Hot Rod, Oft Road, Pro Series, Rally and Road Race. Precision machined, our Ultralite vented rotors are lightweight, durable and economical.

Wilwood's versatile GT rotor is a maximum performance rotor designed to fit a wide range of racing applications. Utilizing Wilwood's unique computer generated 48 curved vane design, these rotors fit a wide variety of mounting configurations and are 15-40% lighter than similar heavy duty rotors. Made from high grade iron, GT rotors are extremely stable and durable. Wilwood's specially designed tooling and manufacturing techniques result in a fast cooling, severe use rotor which greatly out performs the competition. Precision machined, blanchard ground and available pre-bedded, this rotor is in a class by itself.

Wilwood's 32 fin UL Curved vane rotor provides improved cooling performance, strength and durability over comparable dimensioned straight vane rotors used in Late Model, Modified, Open Wheel, Road Race and Off Road applications without adding weight. The thin fin design and increased surface area results in rapid heat dissipation, greater air flow and maximum strength for reduced heat checking and extended rotor life. Cast from high grade iron alloy, the UL Curved rotor is precision machined for consistent performance, and is priced competitively with straight vane rotors. Compare the weight!

Wuwood's H/D Curved rotor utilizes all the same advanced design characteristics as the GI rotor and features the popular 8 lug configuration used in Late Model Short Track, Road Race and Oft Road racing. Consistency, durability, and volume manufacturing combined with excellent design and cooling properties make this an economical high end performer. "GT' iron alloy and precision machining complete the H/D Curved package.
